Lester Centre and Harbour Theatre Team Up to Launch Udderfest with Smithers-Born Scalawag

To launch Prince Rupert's 21st annual Udder Theatre Festival, Harbour Theatre and the Lester Centre of the Arts will co-present a cocktail reception and concert by vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Teo Saefkow, performing as Scalawag, on Wednesday, August 14, with tickets on sale immediately.

The event will inaugurate four days of dramatic performances held at the Tom Rooney Playhouse, with Fringe-style shows including scripted comedies, fully-improvised sketches, and kids' theatre.

"We're very proud to collaborate with Harbour Theatre to share an evening of music by Scalawag," said Michael Gurney, General Manager of the Lester Centre of the Arts. "It highlights the fact that Udderfest has many facets: theatre may be centre stage, but it's really about innovative, daring performances that every year increase Northwest BC's reputation for fostering superb artists like Scalawag."

Teo Saefkow (Scalawag) is a multi instrumentalist, playing trumpet, saxophone, percussion, bass, ukulele and guitar. His sound is described as a mix between Hozier, Paul Simon, and a young Leonard Cohen, Teo grew in Smithres, BC in a very artistic household: his mother, a painter, writer, and magazine publisher; his father, a graphic designer, set designer and guitarist/singer. Saefkow and longtime friend Zak Windle co-produced their first 10-track album in June 2016. Following his graduation from the conservatory acting program at Vancouver's Studio 58, he he went on to write, record and self-produce his first solo album under the name Scalawag, which was released in March 2019.

Saefkow's Prince Rupert appearance will be part of a 12-city concert tour that criss-crosses the province.

A cocktail reception starting at 6:30 p.m. will precede Scalawag's performance at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14. The reception will include a cash bar as well as the sale of non-alcoholic refreshments. Udderfest passes will be sold during the reception, and festival performers will provide previews of their shows.

Tickets ($15) for the Lester Centre reception and Scalawag performance are on sale immediately at Cooks Jewellers and the Lester Centre Box Office. Learn more about Scalawag at thescalawagmusic.simvoly.com.
